Jet Ski is a generic term encompassing all makes of personal watercraft. There are two basic types of jet skis, the stand up version which is used by competitors and the sit down version which is better suited for crusing and recreational use. The main difference is that the stand up version has a pivoting handlebars and no seat. This design greater freedom and movement to the rider. Riders use this type of personal watercraft to perform stunts such as jumps, rolls, and backflips. The sit down version has a larger hull and can be made for one rider up to three riders. This type of personal watercraft is comfortable for longer distances and gives the riders a pleasant ride. Kawasaki was the first manufacturer to build jet skis in 1973. This jet ski came to the general public around 1976 and the sport as we know it was born. Jet skiing has gradually gained popularity and in the early 90s the sport evolved into competition levels and started to attract sponsorships. This allowed riders to commit themselves to trailing full time and develop the sport to the skill level we see today. Waverunner is another name for personal watercraft.
